Amazon Drought and Wildfires 2024

The Amazon region faced a severe drought and record-breaking wildfires in 2024, with water levels in rivers like Madeira dropping drastically. The Brazilian government declared a state of emergency in six cities. The drought, driven by climate change, El Niño, and the ITCZ shift, impacted biodiversity and cut off communities from essential supplies. Wildfires surged to 38,000 in August 2023, reaching the highest levels in two decades, and released massive carbon emissions. This drought mirrors a pattern of severe droughts in recent years, threatening long-term environmental damage and posing challenges to local livelihoods and climate resilience.
