The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has highlighted adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with beta blockers such as metoprolol, propranolol, and atenolol, widely prescribed for cardiovascular conditions. The main concern is hypokalaemia (low potassium levels), which can lead to serious health issues like arrhythmias. These findings stem from the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), emphasizing the need for vigilant drug monitoring. Healthcare professionals are urged to report ADRs promptly. The IPC collaborates with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to ensure medication safety. This alert underscores the importance of balancing benefits with risks in beta blocker use.
