Disease X: Emerging Threat
Disease X is a newly identified illness in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with flu-like symptoms and a high mortality rate, primarily affecting children. Since October, 406 cases and 143 deaths have been reported in Kwango Province, a remote and inaccessible area. Severe malnutrition among patients complicates diagnosis and understanding of the disease’s origin. The World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed teams to investigate transmission and collect samples. Preliminary findings suggest fatalities may involve co-existing conditions like malaria, pneumonia, and COVID-19. Symptoms include fever, headache, and breathing difficulties, raising concerns about its rapid spread and impact.
