UN Report on Dryness
A United Nations report highlights that 77% of Earth's land has become drier in the last 30 years, primarily due to desertification and climate change. Dryness poses severe threats to agriculture, water resources, and wildlife, requiring urgent action. Africa faces significant economic losses, with a projected 16% GDP decline in the next five years, while Asia risks a 7% GDP drop. Key crops like maize in Kenya are vulnerable, with yields potentially halving by 2050. Drylands, areas with high evaporation rates, will face reduced water storage by mid-century. Effective water management and sustainable land use are critical for mitigation.
