Migratory Bird Deaths Linked to Avian Botulism
The outbreak of avian botulism at Sambhar Lake, Rajasthan, caused the death of 600 migratory birds. High temperatures, low salinity, and stagnant water quality facilitated this outbreak. Avian botulism, a fatal disease caused by Clostridium botulinum, thrives in such conditions. Migratory birds, weakened by long flights, are particularly vulnerable. Historical records indicate similar outbreaks, including one in 2019 that killed 18,000 birds. Conservation efforts must focus on water quality management and community awareness to mitigate future risks. Sambhar Lake’s ecological importance makes its health vital for migratory bird populations.
