Rare Red-Headed Vulture Sighting in Kasaragod

The critically endangered Red-Headed Vulture was recently spotted in Kasaragod, Kerala, by birdwatcher Sreelal K. Mohan. Known as the Asian King Vulture, it features a striking red head and a wingspan of 2.5 meters. The species, solitary and rare, is primarily found in Central India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia. Kasaragod, a biodiversity hotspot with 407 recorded bird species, now includes this vulture. Conservation efforts, such as reducing the use of diclofenac, a harmful veterinary drug, and protecting habitats, are crucial for the species' recovery. The sighting offers hope for future vulture conservation in the region.
