Nickel Toxicity and Sterol Biosynthesis

University of Georgia researchers have uncovered a link between nickel toxicity and sterol biosynthesis in both mammalian and fungal cells. Their study found that the Sre1 protein, responsible for sterol regulation, is crucial for nickel tolerance, with implications for sterol synthesis and nickel tolerance in humans. The discovery that nickel exposure impacts cholesterol levels similarly in both cell types could open avenues for novel antifungal treatments by targeting the ERG25 gene, which plays a key role in sterol production.
