Southern States Lead in GDP Contribution (2024)
A recent report by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) shows that southern states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu now contribute 30% to India's GDP, benefiting from economic reforms and industrial growth. In contrast, West Bengal's GDP contribution has declined from 10.5% in the 1960s to 5.6%. Punjab, once thriving from the Green Revolution, is struggling, while Haryana's economy has grown significantly. Maharashtra remains the top contributor, but its share has decreased. The report highlights challenges faced by poorer states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, emphasizing the need for balanced, inclusive economic policies.
