India Adds Three New Wetlands to Its Ramsar List

India recently added three new wetlands to its Ramsar Sites list: Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary, Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, and Tawa Reservoir in Madhya Pradesh, bringing the total to 85. Ramsar Sites are internationally recognized wetlands under the Ramsar Convention, established in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, to protect ecologically vital wetlands, especially for water birds. These areas are crucial for biodiversity, water regulation, and combating climate change. Wetlands face threats from urbanization and overuse, necessitating stronger conservation efforts. India has been committed to protecting these areas since joining the convention in 1981.
