What is sulphuric acid?

  • Sulphuric acid is also known as hydrogen sulphate or oil of vitriol. It is a colourless corrosive liquid.
  • It is a very strong acid and a commercially important chemical.
  • While China is the largest producer of sulphuric acid, the largest exporter is Canada. India is also one of the top producers of sulphuric acid.

Where is it used?

  • Production of fertilizers- especially superphosphates and ammonium sulphates
  • Manufacturing of other commercially important chemicals- like nitric acid and hydrochloric acid
  • Processing metals- like iron
  • Manufacturing of products- like explosives, dyes, detergents, etc.
