25th Hornbill Festival of Nagaland
The 25th Hornbill Festival of Nagaland highlights the state’s rich cultural heritage, attracting over 154,000 visitors in 2023. Celebrated since 2000, the festival promotes tourism and showcases the traditions of 14 Naga tribes. The introduction of Indian-made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) to the festival sparked debates due to Nagaland’s liquor prohibition under the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989. While traditional rice beer (Thutse) is permitted, church organizations, particularly the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), oppose relaxing the ban. The government is reviewing the prohibition’s effectiveness amid calls for regulation and rising concerns over smuggling and revenue loss.
