Wetlands Vital in Global Biodiversity Strategies
The UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia, stressed the critical role of wetlands in global biodiversity strategies. An assessment by Wetlands International found that 83% of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) mention wetlands, but specific measurable targets for conservation are often missing. Wetlands, which provide essential services like water quality protection and flood storage, support 40% of global biodiversity. As wetlands are disappearing faster than any other ecosystem, the report urges nations to strengthen efforts in wetland conservation and restoration, especially in key areas like the Amazon Basin.
