Temporary Mini-Moon 2024 (Asteroid 2024 PT5)
Earth welcomes a temporary mini-moon, asteroid 2024 PT5, from September 29 to November 25, 2024. Spotted by NASA’s ATLAS program, this 10-meter asteroid will orbit Earth in a horseshoe-shaped path, influenced by gravity. While not visible to the naked eye due to its faint brightness (magnitude 22), it offers scientists valuable opportunities to study near-Earth objects and asteroid dynamics. Similar to past mini-moons like 2006 RH120, 2024 PT5 aids in understanding how such objects interact with Earth's gravitational field, enhancing asteroid tracking and prediction capabilities for future events.
