Senna spectabilis
Senna spectabilis, initially planted for its aesthetic appeal and shade, has become an invasive species in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, affecting native biodiversity. The tree's rapid growth and allelopathic properties hinder the growth of indigenous plants. Initial mechanical removal methods like uprooting and girdling were ineffective due to coppice shoots. A new agreement with Kerala Paper Products Limited aims to remove 5,000 tonnes of the tree, emphasizing the need for a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to minimize environmental damage. Environmentalists advocate for rigorous standards and transparency, drawing lessons from other reserves like Muthumalai and Sathyamangalam.
