Right to Education Act Amendment

The Union government amended the Right to Education (RTE) Act in December 2024, ending the no-detention policy for Classes 5 and 8. Students failing to meet promotion criteria will now face detention unless they pass a re-examination after remedial teaching. This change addresses alarming learning gaps highlighted by reports like ASER, which showed only 42.8% of Class 5 students could read a Class 2-level text in 2022. Critics argue the no-detention policy led to automatic promotions without adequate assessment, worsening academic outcomes. The revised policy aims to enhance accountability, emphasising teacher responsibility, regular assessments, and improved learning outcomes.
