Paddy Procurement Crisis in Punjab

Punjab is facing a paddy procurement crisis as 90% of the procured crop remains stuck in mandis due to lack of storage space and private millers’ refusal to store paddy. The crisis stems from insufficient storage, controversy over hybrid paddy varieties, and disputes with commission agents and labourers. Only 37.68 lakh tonnes have been procured, significantly lower than the expected 185 lakh tonnes. Delays are affecting the harvest and wheat sowing cycles, increasing the risk of stubble burning. Immediate government action is required to resolve storage issues and improve coordination to manage the crisis.
