NGT Imposes ₹1,000 Crore Fine on Punjab

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has fined the Punjab government Rs 1,000 crore for failing to manage solid and liquid waste effectively. The fine is based on the state's non-compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016 and the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986. Punjab has accumulated significant legacy waste and has a gap in treating 314.06 million liters of sewage daily. The NGT has held top officials accountable and ordered them to explain their non-compliance within a month. The tribunal continues to monitor the situation, with a review scheduled for September 27, 2024.
