Solid Waste Management Rules 2026
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, which act as a comprehensive regulatory framework superseding the 2016 rules to introduce a technology-driven approach effective from April 1, 2026.
- The primary goal is to integrate Circular Economy principles and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) into the waste management infrastructure to achieve a zero-waste to landfill status.
- A mandatory Four-Stream Segregation system is introduced where waste must be separated into Wet Waste (kitchen waste), Dry Waste
