Merchant Shipping Bill 2024

The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, introduced in the Lok Sabha, modernises India's maritime regulations, replacing the Merchant Shipping Act of 1958. Spearheaded by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the bill enhances vessel registration, maritime education, safety, and pollution prevention. It allows Indian companies to register foreign-chartered vessels and offers provisional registration for ship recycling. The bill strengthens maritime labour standards and authorises the government to act against unsafe or illegally flagged vessels. It aims to boost India’s shipping industry by aligning regulations with global standards, fostering economic growth, and promoting environmental sustainability.
