Mapping Indian Ocean Floor for Climate and Weather Prediction
Scientists Raheema Rahman and Hasibur Rahaman from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) conducted a bathymetry study to map the Indian Ocean floor. This research aimed to correct underestimations of coastal currents around India and improve predictions related to ocean salinity, temperature, and currents, particularly near the coast. The findings revealed unique deep-swirling patterns and varied flow depths that could influence climate and weather forecasting. INCOIS plays a critical role in enhancing ocean data accuracy, which is pivotal for predicting weather and climate changes affecting the region.
