India’s AstroSat New Discovery Black Hole Binary System

In August 2023, Indian astronomers using the AstroSat satellite discovered an unusual aperiodic modulation of high-energy X-rays from the black hole X-ray binary system “Swift J1727.8-1613.” The frequency of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the system’s high-energy X-rays increased from 1.4Hz to 2.6Hz in just seven days, a variation never before observed in any black hole X-ray binary. This discovery, made through collaborative efforts of several Indian research institutions, provides new insights into gas accretion processes and relativistic jet formation near black holes.
