Income Inequality Trends in India 2023

India has seen some recovery in income distribution post-Covid-19, yet income inequality remains significant. The Gini index improved from 0.506 in 2020-21 to 0.410 in 2022-23, reflecting progress but still trailing 2015-16 levels (0.367). The income share of the bottom 50% rose to 22.82% in 2022-23, while the top 10% retained a significant share at 30.6%. Government schemes like MGNREGA and DBT contributed to reducing disparities. To sustain progress, experts suggest investments in education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure, along with progressive taxation and robust social safety nets to foster inclusive economic growth.
