National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) – Purpose & Functions

Purpose: responsible for the development, maintenance and management of National Highways (NHs) in India.
Year of Establishment: established in 1988 by the National Highways Authority of India Act.
Ministry: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Type: statutory & autonomous body

Functions:

  • planning, construction, maintenance, repair and upgradation of the National Highways, monitoring of contractors and quality assurance of works, traffic management, development of toll systems, and preparation of road safety plans.
  • It also develops, manages, and operates National Highways and Expressways, and provides technical and financial support to State Governments for road development.
