Gravitational Lensing and Discoveries

Gravitational lensing, where massive foreground galaxy clusters magnify light from distant objects, enabled the discovery of 44 stars within the galaxy cluster Abell 370. Conducted by Chiba University and international collaborators using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), this study sheds light on star behavior during “cosmic noon,” the Universe’s peak star formation period. JWST's advanced imaging revealed red supergiants previously hidden by cosmic dust, marking a breakthrough in understanding stellar evolution. The findings enhance knowledge of galactic structures and early Universe phenomena, emphasizing gravitational lensing’s role in uncovering celestial mysteries.
