Gram Nyayalayas Act, 2008
The Gram Nyayalayas Act, 2008, aimed to bring justice closer to rural communities by establishing village-level courts across India. Despite its potential to provide decentralized, affordable, and simplified justice, implementation has been slow, with less than 500 courts set up out of the targeted 2,500. Challenges include infrastructure issues, financial constraints, low public awareness, and lack of integration with higher courts. Proper funding, improved infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and stronger links with the judiciary are needed to make gram nyayalayas more effective, reducing travel costs, case backlogs, and improving access to justice for rural populations.
