G7 Coal Phase-Out Discussion
The G7 energy ministers discussed a coal phase-out by 2035 during their meeting in Turin, Italy. This discussion is a part of their ongoing commitment to transition away from fossil fuels, in line with the pledges made at the UN’s COP28 climate summit. The G7, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, discussed a phase-out timeline consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Despite representing a significant portion of the global economy, the G7 countries are not currently on track to meet their 2030 emission reduction targets. The meeting also highlighted the necessity for more ambitious climate actions and enhanced financing to support vulnerable communities affected by climate change.
