Ethylene Oxide Contamination in Indian Spice Brands
Ethylene oxide contamination in several Indian spice brands, including MDH and Everest, was recently highlighted by reports from Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety and the Singapore Food Agency. Ethylene oxide, a potent sterilizing agent also used in chemical manufacturing, has been classified as a Group-1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer due to its potential health risks such as DNA mutations, reproductive effects, and cancer. This contamination has led to recalls and a halt in sales of affected products in these regions. Countries vary in their regulations of permissible ethylene oxide levels in food, underscoring the need for stringent monitoring and enforcement to safeguard public health.
