What is Lumpy Skin Disease?
- Lumpy Skin Disease or LSD is a viral disease caused by Capripoxvirus- a virus related to the Goatpox and Sheeppox viruses.
- It infects cattle and water buffaloes. It is considered as a major emerging threat to livestock across the world, according to Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.
- It is transmitted by blood-feeding insect vectors such as mosquitoes.
- Some of the signs of infection include:
- Appearance of lump-like nodes on the animal’s skin
- Lesions in the mouth
- Drop in milk yield
- Loss of weight
- Fever
- Excessive nasal and salivary secretion
- Miscarriage in pregnant cattle
- Death in some cases
