Dr. K.S. Manilal – Celebrated Botanist
Dr. K.S. Manilal, a renowned Indian botanist, passed away on January 1, 2025, at age 86. He is celebrated for his 35-year dedication to reviving the Hortus Malabaricus, a 17th-century Latin manuscript documenting Kerala’s medicinal plants. Dr. Manilal translated and annotated this monumental work, publishing English and Malayalam versions. He discovered 19 new plant species and authored over 200 research papers and 11 books. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the Order of Orange-Nassau, he founded CRIKSC to promote indigenous knowledge. His legacy as a pioneer in botany and plant taxonomy continues to inspire future generations.
