Disaster Management Amendment Bill
The Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, passed in the Lok Sabha, updates the Disaster Management Act of 2005 to improve disaster management mechanisms in India. It shifts disaster plan responsibilities to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMA) while introducing Urban Disaster Management Authorities for cities. The Bill emphasizes creating national and state disaster databases for better emergency responses. It highlights increased government funding, with the State Disaster Relief Fund's budget tripling since 2014. The Bill also addresses urban challenges, staffing shortages, and the integration of global warming considerations into disaster strategies.
