COVID-19 Erases Decade of Life Expectancy Gains
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reduced global life expectancy, undoing nearly a decade of progress. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the average life expectancy has dropped to 71.4 years, the lowest since 2012, with notable declines in the Americas and Southeast Asia. The pandemic has exacerbated existing health challenges, including the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases, malnutrition, and obesity. Despite some progress towards health goals, the pace is insufficient, highlighting the need for accelerated efforts and a new Pandemic Agreement to enhance global health security and ensure equitable health outcomes.
