Charaideo Moidams Added to UNESCO World Heritage List
The Charaideo Moidams in Assam, royal burial grounds from the Ahom dynasty, were recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Located about 30 km from Sivasagar, these moidams are unique tumuli built over Ahom kings' graves, reflecting ancient Egyptian practices with items for the afterlife. Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahom kingdom founded by King Sukaphaa in 1253 AD, holds significant historical and cultural value. Despite their popularity among tourists, many moidams are in poor condition, with only 30 protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. This recognition by UNESCO emphasizes the importance of preserving these sites and promoting Assam's rich heritage.
