Chagos Archipelago

The Chagos Archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean, has been a long-standing territorial dispute between Mauritius and the United Kingdom. Originally controlled by France, it was taken over by Britain after the Napoleonic Wars. In 1965, the UK created the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), detaching Chagos from Mauritius for military purposes. Diego Garcia, the largest island, hosts a key U.S. military base. In 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in favor of Mauritius’ sovereignty. A 2024 UK-Mauritius agreement recognized Mauritius' claims but retained UK control over Diego Garcia for 99 years, raising geopolitical concerns.
