CCI Concerns Over Reliance-Disney Merger
The .5 billion Reliance-Disney merger is under intense scrutiny by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) due to concerns about its potential impact on market competition. The merger could create the largest entertainment company in India, controlling 120 TV channels and two streaming services, and holding valuable cricket broadcasting rights. The CCI is worried that this could reduce competition, particularly by raising advertising rates and limiting opportunities for smaller players. Reliance and Disney have offered to sell some assets but are reluctant to part with key broadcasting rights, complicating the approval process. The CCI has given them 30 days to address these concerns, emphasizing the need to ensure a fair and competitive media landscape.
