Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs)
Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) are a new initiative announced in India's Budget 2024, aiming to develop small nuclear reactors using 220-megawatt Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology. This initiative marks a significant shift in India's nuclear strategy by involving the private sector, which was previously restricted by the Atomic Energy Act of 1962. BSRs offer flexibility in siting, faster construction, cost-effectiveness, and are ideal for remote areas and large industries. Research and development of these reactors will be conducted at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, with the broader goal of diversifying India’s energy sources and transitioning to cleaner energy options. Challenges include regulatory changes, safety concerns, and nuclear waste management.
