AUSSOM: New African Union Mission in Somalia

The United Nations Security Council has approved the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), replacing the larger AU anti-terrorism operation starting January 1, 2025. The mission focuses on enhancing security and stability in Somalia, addressing terrorism, and supporting local forces. Funded primarily by the EU and US, concerns remain about long-term financial commitments. The mission highlights a strategic shift toward sustainable peacekeeping, with collective support from 14 Security Council members. However, the US abstained due to funding concerns. AUSSOM represents a critical effort to stabilise Somalia amid ongoing security challenges.
