AstroSat & UVIT

AstroSat & UVIT
AstroSat, India’s first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory, recently marked a decade of operations for its flagship payload, the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). Launched in 2015, the satellite distinguishes itself globally by enabling simultaneous observations across UV, optical, and X-ray bands through its five scientific payloads. The UVIT, developed by a consortium led by IIA, provides superior spatial resolution (<1.5 arcseconds) and ranks second only to Hubble in Far-UV capabilities. Far exceeding its intended 5-year lifespan, AstroSat has facilitated groundbreaking discoveries—from blue stragglers to star formation in dwarf galaxies—cementing its status as a vital asset for the global astronomical community.
