Assam’s Elephant Population 2024
Assam’s elephant population increased to 5,828 in 2024, up by 109 since 2017, as per a survey conducted in February 2024. The state’s five major reserves house 82% of the population, with 68% residing in protected areas. The Direct Visual Total Count (DVTC) method was employed for accurate data collection. Despite the population rise, challenges such as habitat degradation and human-elephant conflicts persist, especially in the Dhansiri-Lungding Reserve, which has the lowest elephant density. Conservation efforts focus on anti-poaching, habitat restoration, and monitoring critical corridors to ensure the long-term survival of the species.
