Antarctica Ice Collapse Risk Lower
Recent research, led by Professor Mathieu Morlighem, suggests that the risk of a catastrophic ice collapse in Antarctica may be lower than previously thought. The study focuses on the Thwaites Glacier, one of the fastest-melting glaciers, using computer models to simulate potential ice cliff collapses. The findings indicate that instead of leading to massive ice cliff failures, faster ice flow into the ocean could prevent cliffs from growing tall and unstable, reducing the overall risk. However, there is still uncertainty, and continued research is essential to understand ice behavior better and address sea-level rise driven by climate change.
