Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs at elevations above 2,400 meters due to reduced oxygen levels. It presents early symptoms like headache, nausea, and fatigue, and can escalate to severe conditions like High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both life-threatening. Prevention includes gradual ascent, resting every 3-4 days above 3,000m, and using medications like acetazolamide. Immediate descent remains the primary treatment. Challenges include inadequate healthcare facilities in Himalayan regions, highlighting the need for advanced medical centres, research initiatives, and public awareness to enhance safety.
