Sarojini Naidu ( 1879 – 1949 ): Important Personalities of Modern India

Introduction
Sarojini Naidu, also called Nightingale of India (Bharatiya Kokila), was an Indian independence activist, poet and politician. She became the second woman president of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the first Indian woman to do so. She was also the first woman to become Governor of an Indian state after independence. As much as Sarojini Naidu is known for her literary excellence, so is she famous for her role in the Indian renaissance movement and her mission to improve the lives of Indian women. Along with Annie Besant, she lectured all over India on the welfare of youth, the dignity of labour, women’s emancipation and nationalism.
