PMEGP: Rural Enterprises Surpass Urban Job Creation

The Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has significantly impacted rural job creation, with 64.55 lakh jobs generated in rural areas from 2008 to 2024. Rural enterprises outperformed urban ones in job creation, with 8.19 jobs per unit compared to 8.07 in urban areas. PMEGP supports self-employment through subsidies, ranging from 15% to 35%, depending on the location and beneficiary category. During the pandemic, rural job creation surged as individuals returned to villages. The programme’s financial outlay includes ₹13,554.42 crore for 2021-26, with provisions for expansion loans under MUDRA. PMEGP remains crucial for rural livelihoods and entrepreneurship.
