Scrub Typhus Outbreak in Tamil Nadu
Scrub typhus, caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi, is spreading across Tamil Nadu, affecting districts such as Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Vellore. Transmitted through bites from infected chiggers, the disease can cause fever, headache, and severe complications like organ failure. Diagnosis involves ELISA and molecular testing, while treatment typically includes antibiotics like doxycycline. Preventive measures, such as wearing protective clothing and using insect repellents, are vital. Environmental factors and human activities are contributing to increased cases. The disease, endemic to the "tsutsugamushi triangle," poses significant health challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations such as farmers and outdoor workers.
