Protests in Katra Over Proposed ₹250-Crore Ropeway Project

Protests in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, led by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, have intensified over the proposed ₹250-crore ropeway project to connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat. Locals, including pony and palanquin operators, fear job losses due to reduced foot traffic. Demonstrations have led to stone-pelting, detentions, and hunger strikes. The government claims 90% of the project is complete and aims to ease the 13-km trek for pilgrims, especially seniors. While the ropeway is expected to boost tourism, concerns about livelihoods persist.
