Tamu Lhosar: Gurung New Year Festival

Tamu Lhosar is the New Year festival of Nepal's Gurung community, celebrated on the 15th of the Nepali month Push (December or January). It marks the transition from one animal cycle ("Lho") to another in the Gurung calendar, this year moving from Garuda to the Snake cycle. The festival features traditional attire, cultural performances, and communal feasts, fostering cultural identity and community bonding. Major celebrations occur in districts like Lamjung, Gorkha, and Kathmandu. Women wear traditional Ghalek shawls and ornaments, while men wear Bhoto vests and Kachhad kilts, emphasizing cultural heritage.
