Discovery of Exoplanet K2-18 b
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has identified exoplanet K2-18 b, located 124 light-years away in a habitable zone, possibly supporting liquid water and life. This Hycean planet, with a radius 2.6 times that of Earth and eight times the mass, has an atmosphere rich in methane, carbon dioxide, and potentially dimethyl sulfide (DMS)—a molecule associated with biological activity on Earth. The discovery highlights the need for exploring larger planets to understand atmospheric conditions and potential habitability. Future studies will focus on confirming the presence of DMS and further analyzing the exoplanet’s atmosphere.
