Tamil Nadu Seeks Mumps Vaccine Inclusion
Tamil Nadu has seen a sharp rise in mumps cases, prompting the Directorate of Public Health to urge the inclusion of the mumps vaccine in the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP). With monthly cases averaging 150 and over 1,000 reported in 2023-24, children aged six to nine are most affected. While the MMR vaccine covers mumps in private healthcare, its absence in the UIP raises concerns. Experts emphasize that complications like orchitis, leading to infertility, make vaccination crucial. Advocacy for mumps as a notifiable disease and the vaccine's inclusion in UIP aligns with public health priorities to curb outbreaks and safeguard vulnerable populations.
