Arctic Ice-Free Day 2030
A recent study predicts the Arctic will experience its first ice-free day by 2030 due to increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming. The Arctic is warming four times faster than the global average, with sea ice declining by 12.2% per decade. The study, based on 11 climate models, forecasts prolonged ice-free periods starting as early as 2027, severely impacting ecosystems and accelerating climate change effects. Loss of sea ice will disrupt Arctic ecosystems, threaten species like polar bears, and amplify extreme weather globally. Immediate action to reduce GHGs is essential to mitigate these consequences.
