Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA)
Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CPA) is a severe lung condition caused by inhaling spores of the Aspergillus mould, primarily affecting individuals with pre-existing lung damage such as TB or interstitial lung disease. Symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, breathlessness, and hemoptysis (coughing up blood). Research by AIIMS Delhi reveals CPA's high mortality rate, with 32% of patients succumbing within five years of diagnosis. Misdiagnosis as TB and lack of appropriate antifungal treatments exacerbate its impact. Early detection and timely intervention with antifungal drugs or surgery are critical to improving outcomes. CPA disproportionately affects older adults and those with smoking-related conditions.
