Marburg Virus Outbreak

The Marburg virus outbreak has affected 17 African countries, leading to at least 15 deaths and hundreds of infections, with Rwanda being the epicenter. Transmitted primarily by fruit bats, the virus spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms range from high fever and headaches to severe bleeding and organ failure, often causing death within 8-9 days. Currently, no vaccines or antiviral treatments exist, but rehydration and symptomatic care improve survival. The UK Health Security Agency has issued travel advisories for affected regions. This outbreak underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and global health vigilance.
